Oppose SB 1120, Preserve Single Family Homes

Dear Assemblymember, I urge you to Oppose, or not vote at all, on SB 1120. The public is unaware of this threat to all family homes with yards in California. A bill this profound should have intense public input and transparency. The legislature must not seem to be rushing a dramatic societal change forward under cover of COVID-19. It is important that the debunking of McKinsey and Co.'s claim (that California needs 3.5M housing units) has caused the governor to walk away from that false figure. Embarcadero Institute confirmed the state's own internal data: the real need is 1.2M apartments and homes needed, and we're close to reaching it without upheaval in how families live. The shortfall is in low-income units. Market rate units far exceed demand in California. The legislature must not seem to be rushing a market-rate developer's bill forth during a severe crisis for low-income families. Finally, the bill threatens destruction of historic Black and Latino communities including South LA, a center of opposition to SB 1120 where a town hall has attracted 300 Black community leaders in opposition. Working-class homeowners earned their path to middle-class. SB 1120 upends this precious victory.
